An open letter to the U.S. Supreme Court

Supreme Court: End Trump’s Deadly Lies & Rhetoric Before More Blood is Shed

30 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

We submit this letter to highlight a critical threat to our constitutional order: President Trump and his allies’ ongoing disinformation and incitement. This crisis demands your urgent attention. Justice must not only be delivered but also resonate. A factual record underscores this situation: — The Washington Post documented 30,573 false or misleading statements from Trump during his first term—averaging 39 per day. Scholars call this a “firehose of falsehoods,” aimed at undermining public trust. Historian Timothy Snyder warns that “the truth is never with those who hold power.” — Trump’s false claims of a stolen election incited the January 6 insurrection, resulting in five deaths and over 140 injured officers. He later pardoned those involved, stating they were “patriots,” and promising “retribution like we’ve never seen.” This message has emboldened extremists and blurred the line between lawful dissent and sanctioned violence. — In 2019, the El Paso mass shooting killed 23 people. The gunman’s manifesto echoed Trump’s “invasion” rhetoric about immigrants. When political language dehumanizes, it becomes a weapon. — On June 14, 2025, Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, and Senator John Hoffman and his wife wounded in a politically motivated shooting. The attacker viewed them as “traitorous politicians.” — One day later, on June 15, Trump posted on Truth Social (see: http://bit.ly/3SWrZSi), accusing Democrats of using undocumented immigrants “to expand their Voter Base,” calling cities like New York and Chicago “crime ridden,” and labeling political opponents as “sick of mind” who “actually want to destroy our Inner Cities.” This rhetoric is not merely careless—it is dangerous. When a sitting president uses terms like “vermin,” promises “mass deportations,” and implies that opposition should be met with “very big force,” the guardrails of democracy weaken. Words have consequences. And so should those who speak them from the highest office in the land. We urge the Court to act as a guardian of the republic: 1. Affirm that incitement based on provable falsehood may violate First Amendment limits when it leads to violence or undermines democratic processes. 2. Consider criminal or civil accountability for public officials who knowingly spread misinformation that incites harm, similar to standards for fraud and defamation. 3. Require federal agencies to implement disinformation response mechanisms and maintain independent review boards to ensure transparency. Extraordinary times demand extraordinary justice. The Constitution was designed to protect us from tyranny, foreign and domestic. Your voice matters. Lives are at stake. The rule of law must prevail.
