Reconsider restarting student loan repayments in financial hardship

The decision to restart involuntary student loan repayments for borrowers in default is an ill-advised policy that will cause significant financial hardship. With the economy already struggling and prices on the rise, forcing repayment at this time will only compound the difficulties many Americans are facing in making ends meet. This move threatens to exacerbate existing racial disparities, as Black and Latino communities are disproportionately impacted by student loan debt burdens. Rather than punishing those seeking an education, more supportive measures should be implemented to ease the burden of student loans and promote accessible, quality education for all. A course correction away from policies focused solely on debt collection toward ones that prioritize the well-being of students and borrowers is urgently needed.
