You have recently doubled-down on your executive order barring mask mandates in public schools, stating that it would be “inappropriate” to have people who have some level of immunity to wear a mask.
Your statement contradicts the emerging understanding of the COVID-19 Delta variant as a more virulent strain that can be transmitted by vaccinated (and unvaccinated) people. I think it is not only appropriate, but prudent to ask Texans to practice selfless service through the simple act of wearing a mask.
My strongest concern is for the millions of children in the state who are not old enough to be vaccinated. Sadly, we are seeing a significant spike in children being hospitalized for COVID. These most vulnerable need those in authority to take prudent action, but your mandate robs Texas communities of the ability to act in the interest of these children.
While I would wish for you to impose a state-wide mask mandate, I’m being more realistic in asking that you just remove the impediment for those communities who want to act in their own best interest.
