An open letter to the U.S. Senate

Oppose & Vote NO on David Keeling for Head of OSHA - For Safety’s Sake

25 so far! Help us get to 50 signers!

Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to oppose the nomination of David Keeling for the role of Head of OSHA. His background is a red flag owing to his prior leadership positions at UPS and Amazon, companies with troubling records on worker safety issues, particularly related to heat exposure. During Keeling's tenures at these corporations, they faced significant OSHA citations and fines totaling millions of dollars for violations involving worker injuries and deaths linked to heat. Several UPS employees were hospitalized for heat exposure under Keeling's watch, and multiple Amazon and UPS workers tragically lost their lives due to extreme heat on the job while he served in executive roles. Is it any wonder that with this background, there are valid fears that Keeling may prioritize corporate interests over robust worker protections as OSHA Head? His industry ties raise doubts about his willingness to advance and enforce comprehensive heat safety standards that corporations have vehemently lobbied against.
Worker safety standards has come a long way since the Lawrence Massachusetts mill disaster in 1860. Today, there are continuous challenges across different industries, and the problem is still the same, safety vs. corporate profit making. Keeling is just another profiteer. I believe placing someone with such close ties to companies resistant to heat regulations could undermine efforts to finalize and implement vital safeguards that experts estimate could prevent thousands of heat-related illnesses, injuries, and fatalities annually among America's workforce. In the face of worsening climate change impacts, including increasingly extreme heat waves, the nation's workers urgently need an OSHA leader dedicated to strengthening heat protections based on scientific evidence and worker safety advocacy - not further corporate profit interests. Keeling's bad track record necessitates stringent scrutiny of his priorities and potential conflicts. Get him under oath, expose his record to the public, and then promptly vote NO on David Keeling for the head of OSHA. Millions of workers will thank you for keeping him out of government.
