An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Stop ICE Overreach

16 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

I am writing to demand immediate action to protect American citizens from the unchecked power of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the agency’s growing disregard for due process and basic human rights. Recent events have underscored the urgent need for congressional intervention to protect all individuals, regardless of their citizenship status, from unwarranted arrests, detentions, and deportations. One glaring example is the case of Rumeysa Ozturk, a Tufts University student who was detained by ICE despite having legal status in the U.S. on a student visa. Despite a federal judge’s order that she should not be removed without 48 hours' notice, ICE flagrantly ignored the order and moved her across the country to Louisiana within just 24 hours. This is not an isolated incident. Many others—students, researchers, workers, and even U.S. citizens—have been detained under questionable circumstances, with little or no regard for the law or due process. This includes individuals like: • Alireza Doroudi, a student at the University of Alabama • Mahmoud Khalil, a lawful permanent U.S. resident • Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown University student • Dr. Rasha Alawieh, an H-1B visa holder • An unnamed University of Minnesota graduate student There have been numerous reports of ICE agents detaining and questioning U.S. citizens, including Jonathan Guerro, who was handcuffed at gunpoint, and a 10-year-old American citizen recovering from brain cancer who was deported to Mexico. These are only the cases we know of, and we can be certain there are many more. These actions are an alarming abuse of power, and Congress must take swift, decisive action to reign in ICE’s authority. I demand that you introduce legislation to protect American citizens and residents from arbitrary arrests, detentions, and deportations by ICE. This legislation should ensure that ICE is held accountable and that due process is guaranteed for all individuals in this country, regardless of their immigration status. Examples of potential pieces of legislation: 1. “There is No America Without Due Process and the Rule of Law Act of 2025” – This bill would protect American citizens from ICE arrests, detentions, and deportations, guaranteeing their fundamental rights under the U.S. Constitution. 2. “No Brown Shirts in America Act of 2025” – This bill would rein in ICE’s unchecked powers and prevent the agency from overstepping its authority. It should ensure that ICE operates within the boundaries of the law, with transparency and accountability, and respect for the rights of individuals. The time for inaction is over. As your constituent, I urge you to take immediate action to protect American citizens and residents from the increasing abuses of power by ICE. We cannot allow this agency to continue to operate with impunity, ignoring the fundamental principles of justice that our nation was founded upon.
