I am writing to express my profound concern regarding the ongoing diplomatic crisis surrounding the United States' aggressive pressure to assume control over Greenland. While explicit threats of force have been walked back, the administration is still actively using economic leverage and high-pressure tactics to force concessions from Denmark—a vital NATO ally—and the self-governing people of Greenland.
This approach is deeply damaging to our international standing. Alliances are built on trust, mutual respect, and the rule of law, not geopolitical coercion. Threatening the sovereignty of a democratic ally undermines the very bedrock of the transatlantic alliance at a time when global stability is already fractured.
As my elected representative, I expect you to take the following actions:
- Publicly Reject Territorial Coercion: Soundly and publicly state that the U.S. respects the full sovereignty of Denmark and the explicit right of self-determination for the people of Greenland.
- Launch Congressional Oversight: Hold immediate hearings via the Foreign Relations/Affairs Committees regarding the State Department's current trilateral negotiations. Congress must ensure our diplomats are upholding existing treaties rather than subverting them.
- Reaffirm NATO Commitments: Publicly reassure our global partners that the United States remains a reliable, principled partner that honors its international obligations.
Treating our closest allies with disregard is counterproductive to our own long-term national security interests. I look forward to hearing your position on this matter and learning what specific steps you will take to restore diplomatic decorum and hold the State Department accountable.
