An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

Oppose HB7683: Protect Trans Students and Inclusive Campus Policies

7 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

I am writing in opposition to HB7683, which misuses the concept of “non-retaliation” to give cover for discrimination against transgender students and threatens diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts on college campuses. By protecting single-sex organizations from any accountability for excluding members of the so-called "opposite sex," this bill effectively authorizes fraternities, sororities, and other social groups to bar trans and nonbinary students from participation. It creates a legal shield for exclusion, while undermining campus policies that aim to ensure fairness and belonging. Furthermore, the bill’s vague language invites the dismantling of DEI programs—initiatives that are vital for supporting underrepresented students, promoting equity, and improving campus climate. HB7683 is part of a larger campaign to roll back progress on inclusion and student rights in higher education. I urge you to reject HB7683 and stand for campuses where all students—regardless of gender identity—are valued, respected, and supported.
