**STOP Billionaire Extraordinary Influence over Elections and Governance of the USA**
You must pass meaningful and strong limits on large political donations. Right now, we are watching Elon Musk pour over $442 Million dollars into republican midterm campaigns in key states across the country. His massive donations are flooding these areas with campaign ads and materials that potentially can influence the elections. In addition, this exorbitant amount of money means any Republican candidates or official who has received these donations have the potential to be beholden to Elon Musk’s agendas. Elon Musk is not an elected official and should not have that much power in our Democracy.
Elon Musk is not the only one who is exerting power and gaining favor through large donations to Republicans and President Trump. A recent article in Spectrum News stated “Republicans (donors) are far out-pacing Democrats (donors), giving $1.54 billion this cycle compared to $590 million given by Democrats.” I am by no means only speaking against the donations to Republicans for large donations to Democrats have the potential to create the same power over policies and gaining favors. These massive donations are taking away the voice of the people of the US for it seems our elected officials are paid for by the rich donors.
No one person should wield that kind of influence over who wins office and what policies get made. Candidates who depend on massive checks from a handful of ultra-wealthy donors answer to those donors, not to the voters who elected them. That is a structural problem, and it will not fix itself.
I expect you, my elected officials, to act immediately. Support and vote for legislation that caps individual political contributions, closes super PAC loopholes, and restores the principle that elections belong to voters, not billionaires. In addition, refuse to accept any of these massive donations to your campaigns. Keep the power where the founding fathers placed it, in the hands of the people.
