Trade Policy Requires Pragmatic Approach, Not Aimless Bluster

The president's claim that tariff pressure forced China to negotiate a trade deal is disingenuous. China has directly refuted any such negotiations are taking place. Trump's erratic trade policies, marked by rash tariff hikes followed by reversals, lack a coherent strategy beyond bluster. His recent suggestion of lowering tariffs on Chinese goods comes after market turmoil and criticism highlighted the economic costs, not Beijing acquiescing to demands. Even reduced tariffs in the range of 50-60% would significantly disrupt trade and consumer choices. The constant seesaw creates economic uncertainty detrimental to business investment and consumer spending. Rather than an "art of the deal" masterclass, this represents an aimless approach levying real harm on the U.S. economy with no tangible concessions from China. A more judicious, coherent trade policy aligned with economic realities would better serve American interests.
