An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

Listen to your constituents, not Trump.

12 so far! Help us get to 25 signers!

In a letter dated 10/17/2025, you write: “Every American should be able to feel safe on their streets...” But, *I* am an American. And I feel less safe in 2025 than I EVER HAVE BEFORE. If you truly believe what you wrote, then you need to consider the feelings of EVERY AMERICAN. Masked, unidentified men are snatching people off the streets. While I am unlikely to be targeted by law enforcement because of my skin color, the same is not true for many of my family, friends, and neighbors. And, because these men are masked and do not provide identification, we are opening doors for impersonators. Impersonators who have, and will continue to, abduct women and children. Impersonators who have and will continue to rape women. Similarly, the erosion of due process makes all of us less safe. If people in America are no longer guaranteed a trial, anyone can make any claim against them and have them jailed or deported. For example, law enforcement could claim you’re not a citizen. Non-citizens don’t get trials. You get deported. It could happen to YOU. It could happen to ME. We are both citizens, but without the opportunity to prove that in court, it doesn’t matter. That’s what due process is for. I will not feel safe if the national guard comes to the fifth district. I will not feel safe if the military begins policing the fifth district. I will not feel safe if we continue to ramp up surveillance of ordinary citizens. I will not feel safe if I can no longer afford to pay my health insurance premium because the ACA tax credit expires (and FYI, 57% of republican voters are also IN SUPPORT of the ACA tax credit). Here are a few things that *would* make me feel safer: •common sense gun control. In the US in 2024, 533 people were killed in mass shootings. By contrast, only 29 people were killed by criminal aliens. Clearly, mass shootings are a bigger danger. And, 83% of Americans support background checks for private and gun show sales, which would likely have an effect on both of those numbers. •Medicaid for all. 57% of Americans believe the government should ensure everyone has health insurance. •Reform the insurrection act. Deploying the U.S. military against civilians creates violence where none existed and hurts communities rather than protecting them. •require all law enforcement agents (except those who normally operate undercover) to show their faces, provide identification, and have ID numbers clearly visible on their uniforms. If you want EVERY AMERICAN to feel safe in their streets, you need to talk to more of us. You need to LISTEN and LEARN what things make us feel safer, and what makes us feel less safe. Because your policies are only making a fraction of Americans feel any safer. You could hold an in-person town hall to hear about how your constituents feel regarding their personal safety. This would be a great time for it since even tho you’ve asked to have your salary withheld, you’ll still receive back pay when the shutdown ends.
