Today’s impeachment hearing gives the Senate a rare opportunity to govern with profound empathy for the American people. Empathy is the soul of our republic, citizens and their representatives caring for each other through their democratic institutions, leading to freedom and equality for all.
In some ways, our US Declaration of Independence was like an impeachment of the King. And the first fact of that case was that the King “refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good!” The facts that followed in that document laid out how the king had not protected or empowered the American people, but rather acted on his own behalf.
And the American people convicted the King because what was at stake was the people’s freedom and opportunity for the prosperity of the people. The American people fought and died for each other because of their deep empathy for and responsibility to each other and not the king.
Today I watched the House managers present their case about why you as Senators should try this impeachment. I was moved to tears at Rep. Jamie Raskin's closing argument.
I believe Rep. Raskin and his colleagues made a compelling case for the people, the constitution, and against the cop-killer former POTUS who aspired to be a king. Now the Senate has the opportunity to side for the people’s freedom, the people’s opportunities, and the people’s prosperity.
Anything less is a rejection of empathy as a core American value and a return to an authoritarian rule of a monarch. I trust that you will side with the people and not only try the cop-killer former POTUS but convict him and strip him of any right to future office, as well as, strip him of all benefits normal for a former POTUS.
