An open letter to the President & U.S. Congress

Release Mahmoud Khalil, protect Constitutional rights and free speech.

The arrest and indefinite detention of Mahmoud Khalil by the Department of Homeland Security is a blatant violation of his constitutional rights and an assault on freedom of speech. As a legal permanent resident, Khalil has been denied meaningful access to legal counsel and visitation from his family, including his pregnant wife. He has not been charged or convicted of any crime, yet he was targeted solely for his activism and leadership in the student movement protesting Israeli oppression of Palestinians. This politically motivated arrest is an act of anti-Palestinian racism intended to silence advocacy for Palestinian rights, threatening the free speech of all Americans. Khalil must be immediately released from DHS custody, his constitutional rights restored, and this lawless abuse of power halted. Universities nationwide must protect students from such vile assaults on free thought and expression. DHS must refrain from any further illegal arrests criminalizing constitutionally protected speech and activity. Khalil's continued detention is unacceptable and a threat to civil liberties.
