An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Stop demonization of regulations, call them what they are: consumer protection

6 so far! Help us get to 10 signers!

I'm writing to you today as a constituent who benefits from consumer protections, which are currently being demonized by conservatives as "overbearing regulations." Regulations keep Americans safe as they live, work, and eat. Live: Just 50 years ago, rivers regularly caught on fire, acid rain impacted our nations infrastructure, flora, and fauna, and companies could pump as much waste as they wanted into our skies and waterways. The EPA, clean water and clean air acts, and other environmental regulations that have come since the 1970's have allowed us and our children to enjoy breathing clean air, playing in clean water, and generally live a better life in our environment. People forget that humans are animals too, we are just as beholden to the health of our ecosystem as the whales. Yet, the Pentagon recently called climate change a "woke ideal," a sign of the backslide that the Republican Party and America as a whole has taken from Nixon, who understood the need to protect our country from an environmental standpoint. Work: In that same time period, workers used to have very few to no protections from safety at their job. Whether it was the obvious "Radium Girls" or tragic on-the-job accidents, before OSHA, American workers were less safe. Why would anyone want to disband a department whose entire job is helping keep Americans safe at a place they spend 8+ hours a day? Yet, many Republicans have already begun to push this as a potential. Eat: Regulations also mean that you can go to a grocery store and pick up ingredients for dinner, without being scared for the health of your family from an outbreak of Listeria or E. coli or botulism. The FDA and other departments work to ensure that harmful bacteria are not in our food, dangerous diseases are not spread from farm to farm or from animals to humans, and overall that when you sit down to a meal, you don't have to worry about going to the hospital. Trump removed many food safety regulations in his first term and wants to keep going. What are you doing to keep Americans safe when they play, work, and eat? How are Americans to LIVE without consumer protections? You've already begun to allow Trump to start chipping away at these safety mechanisms, how long until the impact is too much to bear? We cannot go back to a time when regulations did not exist. Your constituents need you to stand up for them and protect OSHA, protect environmental regulations and the EPA, protect the FDA and food regulations. What actions are you taking to keep Americans protected? What actions are you taking to strengthen and protect regulations across the country?
