Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to oppose and vote NO on the proposed “Endangered Species Amendment Act of 2025” introduced this month by Rep. Bruce Westerman.
The amendments in this act are in fact a war on the bedrock legislation that has protected and preserved the United States wildlife and species biodiversity for decades.
The bill is specifically intended to roll back key protections, and prioritize politics of powerful special interest groups and lobbyists over science in species management decisions. In addition, it would shift critical responsibilities to under-resourced state agencies, and serve as an excuse to gut yet another department tasked with overseeing the ESA
The Endangered Species Act is crucial legislation that has saved countless species from extinction at the hands of Republicans lawmakers, and the rapacious demands of the special interest groups that have endorsed the bill and its rollbacks:
⁃ American Farm Bureau
⁃ Center for Sport fishing Policy
⁃ Dallas Safari Club
⁃ Forest Landowners Association
⁃ National Association of Homebuilders
⁃ National Cattleman’s Beef Association
⁃ National Mining Association
And many others that have one thing in common: Wildlife is in the way of their interests, and they could care less about the environment, biodiversity, or simply not killing things.
At a time when climate change and habitat loss are already placing immense pressure on vulnerable species, weakening the Endangered Species Act would be disastrous.
I urge you to reject any legislation that erodes the Endangered Species Act's core principles and proven track record of success. The overwhelming majority of Americans support protecting endangered species, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure a future where our nation's wildlife can thrive.
Most importantly, the consequences of inaction and stopping these foolish rollbacks will be irreversible, and rob future generations of our natural heritage.
Upholding the Endangered Species Act is not only an environmental imperative but also a moral imperative. Oppose Westerman’s Bill and Vote NO. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
