Oppose Michigan's Pay-Per-Mile Road Usage Charge Pilot

Reject the road usage charge pilot program before it moves forward. This system punishes the wrong people and opens the door to government surveillance of every trip Michigan drivers take. The people who will get hit hardest are those who drive for work — tradespeople, delivery drivers, home health aides — people who have no choice but to rack up miles. A gas tax at least spreads the burden across consumption. A per-mile charge turns their livelihood into a tax liability. And the tracking methods being floated, including cell phone location data and vehicle telematics, are a serious privacy problem. Asking Michiganders to hand over their location history just to use the roads they already pay for is not a trade-off the state should be making. The pilot is set to launch in February 2027, which means there is still time to stop it. Please oppose this program and push for road funding solutions that don't surveil residents or penalize working drivers.
