I’m your constituent. I’m writing to urge you to take immediate action to revoke the reckless tariff authority that former President Donald Trump has once again used to destabilize the U.S. economy — even as he now attempts to walk back the damage with a temporary 90-day pause.
Trump’s recent announcement of sweeping new tariffs triggered chaos in the markets, wiping out trillions of dollars in American wealth in a matter of hours. Retirement accounts, small business investments, and family savings were all hit hard. Leading economists called his tariff moves incoherent and dangerous — and they were right.
Now, instead of reversing course entirely, Trump is pressing pause — not because he has a strategy, but because of the backlash. This whiplash approach to trade policy only deepens the instability. A short-term pause does nothing to protect the American economy from further damage once the clock runs out.
There’s no clear rationale or consistent policy behind these decisions. They risk driving up prices, disrupting supply chains, and damaging international relationships — all while Americans continue to struggle with economic uncertainty.
Congress has the authority to act. I was encouraged to see the recent Senate vote to reverse Trump’s tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum — particularly the support from four Republican Senators. That bipartisan alarm should be a wake-up call.
It’s time for Congress to reassert its constitutional role in trade policy and ensure long-term economic stability. You can and should move swiftly to restrict or revoke the president’s unilateral tariff powers when they’re used recklessly and without clear justification.
Please take action now to protect the American economy and working families from further harm.
Thank you for your time. Please do what is right for all Americans.
