Oppose DHS $8 Million Influencer Program for ICE Recruitment

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the Department of Homeland Security's allocation of $8 million in taxpayer funds for a social media influencer program to recruit for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This expenditure represents a wasteful use of public resources that should be redirected toward more effective and transparent recruitment methods.
According to the Wall Street Journal, DHS has earmarked at least $8 million to pay online creators approximately $1,500 each to produce content that normalizes ICE careers through peer-to-peer storytelling. The program specifically targets Gen Z, millennials, military families, fitness enthusiasts, and tactical gear fans with the stated goal of generating over 5,000 applicants by flooding the market with positive messaging. This approach raises serious questions about fiscal responsibility and appropriate use of government funds.
Beyond the influencer payments, DHS has spent over $5 million on social media ads across Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Spotify since early 2025. The agency has also coordinated with White House directives to flood airwaves with detention imagery and has given influencers access to ICE operations, including providing uniforms and allowing them to join raids. This level of investment in social media propaganda exceeds reasonable recruitment advertising and ventures into ideological promotion.
Traditional government recruitment methods through official channels, job fairs, and partnerships with educational institutions have proven effective for federal agencies without requiring millions in influencer payments. The current program's focus on creating viral content and controlling narratives suggests priorities beyond simple hiring needs.
I urge you to investigate this program and work to defund this influencer initiative. These taxpayer dollars could be better spent on border infrastructure, immigration court backlogs, or returned to constituents. Please support oversight measures that ensure DHS recruitment spending is transparent, cost-effective, and focused on legitimate hiring needs rather than propaganda campaigns.
