Today I’m writing about human rights violations by the Trump Administration, and a terrible symbol of this. It’s why I urge you, in the strongest possible terms to co-sponsor and vote YES to passage of The "No Cages in the Everglades Act”.
This bills seeks to shut down the inhumane and ecologically destructive immigration detention facility known as "Alligator Alcatraz."
This facility, located within the protected Florida Everglades ecosystem, has been operating without proper oversight or transparency. Recent reports by members of the House of Representatives indicate detainees are being held in unsafe, unsanitary conditions without access to basic necessities like clean water, medical care, and legal support.
Reports from various media outlets also note cruel and barbaric practices are common at this concentration camp.
Not only is this a violation of human rights, but the detention center also threatens the delicate Everglades environment and the lands of the Miccosukee Tribe.
Shuttering this facility is a moral imperative, or it will be replicated in other states.
No one should be subjected to such degrading treatment, and we have a responsibility to act decisively to uphold the dignity and basic rights of all people in our custody. Furthermore, the ecological impact of this detention camp on the unique Everglades ecosystem is unacceptable.
We cannot allow such blatant disregard for environmental protection and indigenous sovereignty. Closing this camp by legal means via Congress will increase transparency around immigration detention practices nationwide while safeguarding a precious natural area.
This legislation deserves your support as a step towards more humane and sustainable immigration policies that respect human rights and the environment. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
