This bipartisan legislation would close dangerous loopholes dating back to shootings like the Mother Emanuel Church shooting in Charleston and ensure comprehensive vetting for all firearm sales while upholding lawful ownership. Its passage represents a common sense step towards curbing the epidemic of gun violence devastating communities nationwide. Swift enactment of these reforms is imperative to enhance public safety and prevent further senseless loss of life. The statistics are clear and highlight the urgency for strengthening background check policies. Over 1.3 million Americans have been shot and nearly 500,000 killed by guns since the Sandy Hook tragedy in 2012. Recent incidents demonstrate that background checks are effective lifesaving measures when properly implemented, preventing individuals who pose risks from obtaining firearms. With over 90% of gun owners and non-owners supporting universal background checks, there is a clear public mandate for action. Support H.R. 18.
