Just happened to speak to an educator in Sampson county where my mother was born and raised and I spent many happy days as a child. He was telling me about a federal grant the county schools had pulled because it was considered to be a DEI related grant. It was a grant to attract teachers who were able to speak Spanish as well as English to help teach the 70% of their student population who are Hispanic. Sampson is as you know a rural agrarian county and I am confident these children’s parents are making it possible to raise most of the chickens, turkeys, pigs, sweet potatoes and many other agricultural goods our state and nation rely on. These children are mostly poor enough to qualify for free school meals. The least we can do as a society is provide a decent education to allow them to assimilate and thrive in our communities. Even those who are not citizens, documented or otherwise, are bolstering a soft rural economy and are buttressing our social security coffers with funds that will never benefit many of them. Based on much of what I seen DOGE is causing chaos without much to show for it. The bulk of the savings are proving to be imaginary and touted success verges on the very fraud it keeps claiming to have eliminated. I am very disheartened by the dismantling of our federal government in such a haphazard, frankly stupid, way. Having proper language skills to teach is not DEI, it is necessary. If you want someone to learn English, it is helpful to be able to communicate in the primary language to maximize the educational experience.
