Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
Y’all sure are keeping women busy these days, what with all the women-disparaging candidates out on the stump trying to win our votes by insult.
Now we get to read about the guy trying to defeat Senator Brown in Ohio, Bernie Moreno trying out his snark chops on a crowd, a lot of whom seem to be of the insultable gender.
“At a town hall last week in conservative Warren County, Moreno expressed mystification that suburban women could be so focused on the issue of abortion, adding that it was “a little crazy” for older women to care about reproductive rights at all.
Here’s what he said, according to a video obtained by the NBC affiliate in Columbus: “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ … Okay, it’s a little crazy, by the way, but — especially for women that are like past 50 — I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’””
Oh snap.
Mr. Moreno had a mother. Who might be past reproduction, the only metric of worth it seems. But she wasn’t always, as evidenced by her insulting son. Caring about women’s rights does not stop at menopause.
All I can say is keep talking. Please.
Oh and I just read a most excellent article in the WaPo about the burgeoning argrivoltaics industry in Texas. How come y’all never talk about that? Men who look like my West Texas daddy are thrilled with the combination of solar and farming, solar and grazing, solar making them money they could never make in a traditional farming and ranching manner. And it’s great for the planet.
Try some positivity for a change. We like that better.
