Stop Providing Cover for Criminals: Fix ICE/CBP Identification Standards

66 so far! Help us get to 100 signers!

Congressional failure to rein in lax law enforcement identification standards is fueling a public-safety crisis. By allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to conduct operations masked, in plainclothes, in unmarked vehicles, and with generic "POLICE" branding, the federal government has created a state of tactical ambiguity that is being directly exploited by criminal impersonators. Reports from across the country confirm that these bad actors are using this ambiguity to commit robberies, kidnappings, and sexual assaults. When the public cannot distinguish a legitimate federal agent from a violent criminal, the result is a collapse of community trust and an unacceptable risk to public safety. This is not a matter of "tactics"; it is a failure of institutional competency. The federal government has an affirmative duty to ensure its agents are identifiable to the public they serve. I urge you to exercise your Article I oversight authority to: 1. Mandate clear, non-ambiguous identification standards for all ICE and CBP enforcement personnel, requiring distinct, secure agency insignia (such as "FEDERAL AGENT: ICE/CBP"). Professional federal law enforcement agencies must be held to uniform standards of public accountability. By operating like unidentifiable bounty hunters, these agencies have lowered the bar so low that violent criminals can easily replicate their appearance. Forcing agents to look and act like accountable professionals eliminates the anonymity that criminals exploit, and empowers the public to immediately identify a threat. 2. Require the use of modern verification technology, such as scannable, public-facing identification systems, to ensure that any individual claiming federal authority can be verified instantly by the public. 3. Prohibit the use of ambiguous, generic "POLICE" labeling on tactical gear used by federal immigration agents to eliminate the confusion that currently aids criminal impersonators. The current "see something, say something" approach is broken when the government itself provides the cover criminals need to operate. I will be closely monitoring your legislative actions on this issue to judge your commitment to the Rule of Law and the safety of your constituents.
