Oppose Unconstitutional Executive Order Renaming Defense Department

I am writing to express my deep concern over President Trump's recent executive order attempting to rename the Department of Defense to the "Department of War." This action is not only misguided but also appears to overstep the bounds of executive authority, infringing upon the constitutional role of Congress.
On September 5th, President Trump signed an executive order allowing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to use titles like "Department of War" and "Secretary of War" in official communications. This order circumvents the proper legislative process required for such a significant change to a federal department. The Department of Defense, established in 1949, replaced the Department of War dissolved in 1947. Any formal change to its name requires Congressional action, not just an executive order.
This attempt to unilaterally rebrand a major government department sets a dangerous precedent of executive overreach. It undermines the system of checks and balances crucial to our democracy. Furthermore, the proposed name change to "Department of War" is regressive, potentially damaging to international relations, and does not accurately reflect the department's full range of responsibilities, which include peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts.
I urge you to take immediate action to challenge this unconstitutional use of executive power. Specifically, I ask that you:
1. Publicly denounce this executive order as an overreach of presidential authority.
2. Introduce or support legislation that clarifies and reinforces Congress's role in naming and structuring federal departments.
3. Call for hearings to examine the legality and potential consequences of this executive order.
The administration has not provided any cost estimates for implementing these changes, which could potentially waste taxpayer money on an unnecessary and legally questionable rebranding effort. As my representative, I implore you to stand firm against this erosion of congressional authority and to protect the proper balance of power in our government.
Time is of the essence. The longer this order stands unchallenged, the more it normalizes such overreach. Please act swiftly to address this issue and uphold the constitutional separation of powers that is fundamental to our democracy.
