I am writing to ask you to vote YES on S.3105, the ISLET Act. Right now, there is a treatment that can change the lives of people with Type 1 diabetes forever. It is called islet cell transplantation. Doctors take insulin-producing cells from a donated pancreas and transplant them into a patient. When it works, people who spent their entire lives managing their pancreas 24/7 — injecting insulin, monitoring glucose continuously, counting carbs, and waking up in the middle of the night in a dangerous blood sugar crash — can finally live a normal life. 8 out of 10 patients who receive this treatment no longer need insulin at all. This is not experimental. This is not new. Other countries already offer this. Americans are being left behind.
The only reason Americans cannot access this treatment is a paperwork mistake made decades ago. Islet cells were accidentally classified as a drug instead of an organ. That one error buried this treatment under impossible regulations. The ISLET Act corrects that mistake and opens the door for Americans to finally access a treatment that already works. This bill costs nothing. It creates nothing new. It simply removes a bureaucratic roadblock that should never have existed in the first place.
Senator, people with Type 1 diabetes did not choose this disease, nor was it caused by lifestyle or diet. Many are diagnosed as children. It is the body’s own immune system that attacks the pancreas and destroys the cells that produce insulin, which is needed for glucose absorption — the fuel of the brain. We manage it every single day with no breaks, no vacations, and no cure in sight. The ISLET Act will help millions of Americans with Type 1. Every single one of them deserves that chance. Please vote YES on S.3105.
