An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Denouncing Legislative Hypocrisy and the 'One Big Beautiful Bill'

I am writing to express my profound disappointment regarding the recent passage of the "One Big Beautiful Bill" in the Senate, encourage the House to KILL THE BILL, and the apparent inconsistency it highlights in the approach to federal legislative packages. For years, many of you, including Senator Mike Lee, have rightly denounced massive, omnibus spending bills. Senator Lee himself, in December 2015, characterized such legislation as a "monstrosity" and an "insult to this body, the Constitution, and the American people," arguing that controversial policies within them "never would have passed had they been exposed to the light of day". Yet, despite these principled objections to opaque, sprawling legislation, the "One Big Beautiful Bill"—a package of considerable scale and complexity—received your support. This stark contrast between past rhetoric and current action on a bill of this magnitude is deeply concerning.   True common-sense reforms, which the people of Utah and across the nation desire, are not found in these sprawling packages. Instead, they emerge from transparent, individual legislative proposals that are debated and voted upon based on their inherent merits, not as part of a bundled deal filled with "kickbacks" or provisions designed to secure votes for the larger whole. The inclusion of controversial measures, such as the public land sale provision initially proposed by Senator Lee within the OBBB, which faced significant opposition even from within your own party, exemplifies the very type of legislative maneuvering that undermines public trust and fiscal responsibility. We expect our representatives to champion fiscal prudence consistently, not selectively.   As your constituent, I urge you to return to the principles of open and honest debate, and to insist on a legislative process that allows each issue to stand or fall on its own. If our representatives cannot commit to this fundamental shift—to prioritize transparent, merit-based legislation over massive, opaque packages—then I intend to actively support candidates who are willing to uphold these common-sense reforms and truly represent the fiscal values they claim to champion.
