Ban AI from Therapeutic Mental Health Care

I am writing today to urge you to create a law similar to the Wellness and Oversight for Psychological Resources Act, an Illinois law enacted August 1, 2025. The law prohibits AI systems from delivering therapeutic treatment or making clinical decisions. The legislation still allows AI tools to be used in administrative roles, such as scheduling or note-taking, but draws a clear boundary around direct patient care. AI systems lack the empathy, accountability or clinical oversight necessary for safe mental health treatment, and can actually worsen mental health, resulting in increased suffering for the individuals, and can lead to self-harm, including the ultimate self-harm—suicide. Californians deserve safe, effective, and helpful treatment for mental health issues—not AI chatbots. Thank you for your time.
