I am writing to express my strong opposition to any proposals aimed at dismantling the Department of Education. Such actions would have profound and generational consequences on the development of our nation’s children, particularly those from working-class families.
The Department of Education plays a vital role in ensuring equitable access to quality education across the country. It provides critical funding and oversight for public schools, supports special education programs, and protects students from discrimination. Eliminating this department would disproportionately harm vulnerable populations, including students from low-income households, rural communities, and those with disabilities.
Education is the foundation of opportunity. Without federal oversight and funding, the disparities in resources between school districts will grow even wider. States with limited resources may struggle to adequately fund schools, leaving many children without the tools they need to succeed. Working-class families, who already face significant economic challenges, would be hit the hardest.
Furthermore, dismantling the Department of Education could jeopardize programs such as Pell Grants and federal student loans, which make higher education more accessible for millions of students. Without these programs, countless young Americans may lose the chance to pursue higher education, limiting social mobility and widening the gap between the wealthy and the working class.
As your constituent, I urge you to strongly oppose any efforts to eliminate the Department of Education. Instead, I encourage you to support policies that strengthen our education system and expand access to quality resources for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic background.
