I am writing to express my strong opposition to efforts by a small group of Michigan legislators to ban same-sex marriage in our state. This discriminatory move would undermine the freedom and dignity of countless Michigan families and goes against the values of equality and inclusivity that our society strives for. The 2015 US Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges made same-sex marriage legal nationwide, recognizing the fundamental right of all couples to marry regardless of gender. As of the 2020 census, there were nearly 26,000 same-sex couples in Michigan, many of whom are married and raising families. Attempting to roll back their rights would be a regressive step that disregards the lived realities of our LGBTQ community members. Furthermore, Michigan voters decisively rejected an effort to ban same-sex marriage in 2004, with nearly 60% voting against the discriminatory measure. It is clear that the proposed resolution by a handful of legislators is out of touch with the will of the people and the principles of equal protection under the law. I urge you to reject this harmful and divisive resolution. Instead, we should be working to further enshrine protections for the LGBTQ community and ensure that all Michiganders are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Our state is strongest when we embrace diversity and uphold the civil rights of all our citizens.
