Oppose/Vote No on Maria Lanahan for Federal Bench in Missouri: Liar and Zealot

Today I take pen in hand to write and urge you to do all you can to block the elevation of Maria Lanahan to the Federal bench in the Eastern District of Missouri. She’s an extremist, and has spread lies and disinformation to support anti-abortion cases. Lanahan is opposed by many women’s rights and health agencies including Reproductive Freedom For All, and the National Women’s Law Center and the Alliance for Justice to name a few. Lanahan has also co-authored a disturbing lawsuit against the FDA's regulation of the medication abortion pill mifepristone, making outrageous and inflammatory claims that it "starves the baby to death in the womb." This rhetoric demonstrates an extreme bias against abortion access and a willingness to promote misinformation. Lanahan's involvement in this litigation raises serious concerns about her ability to rule impartially on cases involving reproductive rights. The amended complaint she helped draft contains numerous false and unsubstantiated allegations, such as the claim that abortion pills cause post-traumatic stress disorder by associating a woman's home with the procedure. These pseudoscientific arguments have no place in reasoned legal arguments. Moreover, the lawsuit appears to be a blatant attempt at "judge shopping" by refiling in a district with a known ideological lean, undermining principles of judicial impartiality and ethics. Lanahan's central role in this ethically questionable litigation strategy further disqualifies her for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. Given Lanahan's documented history of ideological advocacy against abortion rights through misleading legal arguments, I urge you to reject her nomination. A judicial nominee who has displayed such open hostility towards reproductive freedoms cannot be trusted to uphold the law in an unbiased manner on this critical matter.
