The Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to let the Bureau of Prisons strip hormone therapy from transgender prisoners who have been prescribed it by their own prison doctors. The American Medical Association and the Endocrine Society both recognize gender-affirming hormone therapy as medically necessary. Dr. Carl Streed, a transgender health researcher, told The Advocate that withdrawing hormones "is a dangerous thing to do," warning of risks to mood, cognition, cardiovascular health, and bone density. For prisoners who have had surgery and can no longer produce hormones naturally, forced tapering isn't a policy preference — it's a health crisis.
