Congress Must Choose: Defend Democracy or Enable Dictatorship

In the first 100 days of President Trump’s second term, his administration has bypassed immigration courts, undermined judicial independence, and rolled back civil rights protections (NPR, April 2025; Reuters, April 2025). These are not policy disagreements—they are direct attacks on the rule of law. Experts have drawn troubling comparisons between Trump’s tactics and those of authoritarian leaders like Viktor Orbán and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The centralization of power, weakening of institutions, and erosion of public trust are hallmarks of democratic backsliding (Vox, April 2025). These patterns are familiar—and dangerous. Public confidence is plummeting. Polls show that a growing number of Americans fear we are losing our democratic way of life (Vanity Fair, April 2025). Congress must act now to check executive overreach, reinforce the separation of powers, and defend the Constitution. I urge you to launch investigations, strengthen institutional safeguards, and publicly commit to preserving democratic norms. Delay is not an option. The future of American democracy is at stake.
