Nuanced policy approach needed for Class 3 e-bikes

I share your view that banning Class 3 e-bikes from bike lanes, sidewalks, and paths would be misguided. While regulating unsafe behavior is reasonable, this proposed legislation seems to be based on anecdotal experiences and a fundamental misunderstanding of e-bike classifications. Class 3 e-bikes are pedal-assisted and legally distinct from unregulated throttle-controlled vehicles like e-mopeds. Banning an entire category of low-carbon transportation that enables mobility for many would be counterproductive, especially when motor vehicle traffic remains the primary safety hazard. Rather than overly broad restrictions, a more nuanced approach focusing on managing irresponsible riding behavior, regardless of vehicle type, would better serve the interests of all path and road users. Public safety is paramount, but policies should be grounded in data and equity considerations, not anecdotal discomfort.
