I’m writing to urge you to oppose the JUDGES Act moving through Congress that would create 22 new judgeships for President Trump to fill before his term is over.
Congress’ agreement to create new federal judgeships was negotiated in good faith and is historically passed before the election in order to remain unbiased and nonpartisan. However, Republicans in the House of Representatives broke the good faith agreement and refused to pass the bill until President Trump was elected.
Unfortunately, President Trump’s actions have now pushed us into a constitutional crisis. He has ignored orders from lower courts and the Supreme Court alike, and has threatened to impeach judges who try to hold him accountable.
It is clear that President Trump and his allies in Congress are focused on filling judgeships with loyalists who will allow him to evade accountability and further an anti-democracy agenda.
The impact President Trump’s high level of influence over the judiciary has already had is extreme. The Supreme Court has helped guarantee him presidential immunity while stripping voting and civil rights from everyday Americans.
Our most vulnerable communities cannot afford to allow President Trump to appoint 22 loyalist judges who may weaponize the judicial system in an ideological takeover that will make their lives harder for decades to come.
As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the JUDGES Act.
Thank you.
