America’s Easter gift will be the Insurrection Act: The Trump administration is expected to invoke the Insurrection Act on Easter Sunday to allow mass deportations using federalized National Guard troops, an unprecedented and unnecessary escalation of militarized immigration enforcement. While President Trump has already greatly expanded domestic military deployments to the southern border, activating the Insurrection Act would open the door to deploying troops for direct law enforcement roles like arrests and detentions, violating long-standing principles against using the military as a police force over civilians. Trump has already deported US citizens. This looming invocation represents a disturbing overreach of executive power that could make due process a thing of the past, override civilian control over the military, and trample on our remaining constitutional rights. The imminent threat of deploying armed federal troops against immigrant communities and US citizens is deeply undemocratic and unacceptable in a free society. Protect our liberties from this authoritarian takeover. Do everything you can before it is too late. History will remember those who stood up and those who did not.
