Greetings. I am a voting constituent in rural west Texas.
“Our society has been peaceful and healthy for so long that for many people serious disaster has become inconceivable. Americans who parade around in amateur militia groups and brandish Nazi symbols do so partly because they are unable to conceive of what life would actually be like in a fascist state. Those who attack modern medicine cannot really comprehend a society without it. And those who are cheering the rise of autocracy in the United States have no serious understanding of what it means to live under an autocratic government.”
Reading reporting today it seems apparent y’all were in this complacent group, using your power, designed as a check on extremism, to enable things you believed would never actually happen.
Now apparently panic and shock may be setting in for you. Constituents are calling frantically trying to figure out why they haven’t received the federal funding promised to keep their businesses and lives afloat. And they are generally met with a variety of responses: “What?!” or “The funding has not been frozen” or “I’ll check into that,” or “I just don’t know.”
Or the most helpful one, “I support Pres. Trump’s efforts in this area.”
It also seems like you might be a little concerned about all the firing of our military veterans, who it appears make up/made up a substantial part of the federal work force.
Dismayed as well maybe by firings of USDA and CDC employees who were dealing with the spreading outbreak of bird flu that is threatening the nation’s poultry, cattle, house cats, and humans.
You might also be concerned with cuts to government spending that have hit your voters hard, and those hits look to be continuing.
Nearly 78% of the announced investments from the Inflation Reduction Act for initiatives addressing climate change went to Republican congressional districts. The Financial Times noted that House Republicans are in the position of cutting the law that brought more than $130 billion to their districts.
No pain no gain.
Now Republicans are talking about cutting Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and supplemental food programs, although Republican-dominated counties rely on those programs more than Democratic-dominated counties do.
So while y’all are confirming a great crop of conspiracy theorists, election deniers, science skeptics ad nauseum to head a government led by a person more obsessed with social issues, revenge on his perceived enemies, and his own personal power than actually governing, please stop being shocked that he’s doing exactly what he said he would. And that you made possible.
You put yourselves, and the country, in this position. Own it.
Oh and I suggest putting in more phone lines.
