It sure does seem like the election of Donald Trump to the Office of the Presidency has ushered in a concerted effort to kill our democracy in its cradle doesn’t it?
There have always been elements in our political body who feel that one race or one group or one religion was destined to rule the world, but they’ve never achieved the kind of power in America we see today. Seemingly designed to disrupt the world and any future attempts to help us just try and live in peace and prosperity with each other.
It becomes clearer every day that Trump and his allies propose a dictatorship.
Like this…
Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, who was jailed in the US for money laundering but pardoned by Trump, worked with the Trump family to establish the crypto start-up World Liberty Financial. Which put $799M in Trump’s pocket last year. Zhao now lives in the UAE.
In an interview with the NYT, Zhao explained: “Democracy has been hailed as, like, the holy grail for the last couple hundred years, but democracies are inefficient. If you get a benevolent dictator, it’s actually extremely efficient. There’s very little debate going on. You don’t waste time on a lot of frivolous stuff.”
This is the model for which Trump repeatedly has expressed admiration. This is Fascism.
Or AI, whichever comes first.
History shows the ultimate might-makes-right precedent. Before the US joined WWII, FDR noted that “Nazi forces are not seeking mere modifications in colonial maps or in minor European boundaries. They openly seek the destruction of all elective systems of government on every continent—including our own; they seek to establish systems of government based on the regimentation of all human beings by a handful of individual rulers who have seized power by force.”
Two nights ago, the US struck another small boat in the Caribbean, killing another four people it called “narco-terrorists.” This brings the number of strikes to more than 70. And the number of people killed in the strikes that began a year ago to more than 230 people.
The administration’s justification for the strikes has not been made public. It has claimed—without evidence—that the men on the boats were trafficking drugs. But such a charge would normally be handled by the legal system.
The DOJ produced an opinion providing legal cover for the strikes, which alarmed members of Congress.
One senator said: “If that opinion were to be adopted, it would not constrain any use of force anywhere in the world. I mean, it is broad enough to authorize just about anything.”
On 9/21 a UN report concluded that these extrajudicial killings broke international law. And may be crimes against humanity.
That’s sobering when directed against the US. And when a government considers its own laws to be disposable, who or what is going to stop them?
America has got to regain some position of moral leadership in the world. Otherwise we’re about to repeat some terrible history.
And we’re watching it happen.
