I am writing to ask the Senator to cosponsor SJ Res 1, the bill to remove the time limit to ratify the 1972 Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). This bipartisan bill is championed by co-lead sponsors Senator Ben Cardin (MD) and Senator Lisa Murkowski (AK).
Polling conducted by the ERA Coalition shows that equality is something we can all agree on. Their research found that 94% of respondents would support an amendment to the Constitution to guarantee sex equality. It is past time for the U.S. Constitution to explicitly provide protection from sex discrimination, and Congress can remove any ambiguity surrounding the ERA’s ratification.
This upcoming January 27th marks the 2-year anniversary from when Virginia voted to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment as the 38th- and last needed- state for the ERA to be added to the Constitution. We ask that the Senator sign on prior to this date to show the overwhelming support in Congress for the ERA.
Please look for the Dear Colleague from Senators Cardin and Murkowski. We have talked with you as Zonta and AAUW-WA regarding the ERA in the past, and both Senators have expressed their strong support for Women's equality under the constitution. We thank you for your support. The issue now is TIMING. Please sign on as a co-sponsor ASAP to show support before the Jan 27 March and Rally.
