I urge immediate action against the Trump administration’s cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A proposed 27% budget cut threatens vital services, including climate research and weather satellite funding, jeopardizing lives and economic stability.
The National Weather Service is facing staffing shortages, with a 22% vacancy rate in Texas offices, leading to significant reductions in services (AP News, May 2025).
I’m not opposed to reducing spending in strategic ways, but privatizing NOAA won’t save money. It will lead to higher costs and less transparency.
NOAA’s $6.6 billion budget is only 0.097% of federal spending but yields a return of over 50 times its cost. Cuts to NOAA undermine public safety, disaster response, and scientific integrity.
I urge you to:
- Oppose the proposed budget cuts and privatization of NOAA.
- Make strategic and evidence backed budget cuts that don’t impact vital safety of our communities.
- Support legislation for adequate funding and staffing for NOAA and the National Weather Service.
- Advocate for transparency in decisions affecting public safety.
Our communities depend on your leadership. Please act now to protect NOAA and its life-saving services.
