As members of a nation built by immigrants, we must reject inhumane and counterproductive policies that tear families apart and deprive our communities of hard-working individuals seeking a better life. The recent increase in arrests and deportations of immigrants without criminal records is causing widespread fear and disruption. Many are too afraid to go to work, take their children to school, or even leave their homes. This misguided crackdown will damage our economy by removing productive workers and entrepreneurs. It undermines our values by denying due process and human rights to those seeking refuge and opportunity. The deportation of long-term residents who have established families and ties to their communities is particularly cruel and nonsensical. Rather than pursuing mass deportations that devastate lives and communities, I urge you to support comprehensive immigration reform that provides a pathway to legal status for undocumented immigrants who register, pass background checks, pay taxes, and learn English. This would strengthen our economy, keep families together, uphold our ideals as a nation of immigrants, and allow us to focus enforcement on those who pose an actual threat.
