An open letter to the U.S. Senate

Protect Virginians’ Data and Social Security Access

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

I’m alarmed by recent reports of data mishandling and chaos inside the Social Security Administration. While this is a federal agency, its failures land on the backs of Virginians who depend on Social Security for retirement and disability benefits. Even though you don’t control the SSA directly, you do have power to: Pass a state resolution urging Virginia’s federal delegation and Senate committees to investigate the alleged cover-up. Hold joint hearings with our congressional delegation to gather testimony from impacted Virginians and whistleblowers. Strengthen state privacy laws so agencies and contractors handling sensitive federal data in Virginia meet the highest security standards. Invest in state-level benefits navigators to help seniors and disabled residents get their Social Security benefits when the federal system breaks down. Please act swiftly. Virginians deserve to know their data is secure and that their benefits are protected. Will you commit to supporting a resolution and hearings on this issue?
