Preventing the Abuse of the Alien Enemies Act

History has shown us that broad executive powers used to target specific groups can quickly lead to abuses of power. The Alien Enemies Act was once used to justify the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, a national shame that Congress later formally condemned. We now face another moment where our nation’s commitment to democracy and human rights is being tested. I call upon you to: 1. Hold congressional hearings to investigate the legal and ethical implications of invoking this act in peacetime. 2. Introduce or support legislation that would prohibit the use of the Alien Enemies Act outside of a formal war declaration by Congress. 3. Publicly denounce any executive overreach that targets individuals based on nationality without due process. If this administration is allowed to unilaterally declare individuals as “enemies” without congressional oversight, what prevents future abuses of power under the same logic? I urge you to take immediate action to uphold democratic values and ensure that this administration is held accountable for any unconstitutional actions.
