Oppose the Proposed ICE Facility in Salt Lake City
3 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
Utah does not need an ICE detention facility. I oppose this proposal and expect you to block any federal or state funding for it.
Despite your statement that "we need an ICE facility," you also admitted that neither your administration, Utah's congressional delegation, nor local leaders received advance notice of this specific proposal. That lack of transparency should concern you. This facility is being imposed on our community without proper input or oversight.
Detention centers like the one proposed are not immigration processing facilities. They are jails where people, including families and asylum seekers, are held indefinitely in conditions that have repeatedly drawn criticism from human rights organizations. Utah has a history we should learn from. We interned Japanese Americans at Topaz during World War II, a decision our nation now recognizes as a grave injustice.
I expect you to stand with Utahns who protested this facility Wednesday night, not with an administration pushing mass detention. Withdraw your support for this proposal.
