I am writing to express my strong support for the swift passage of the Taxpayer Data Protection Act, which was introduced today by Democratic leaders, including House Minority Whip Katherine Clark.
The protection of taxpayer information is paramount. Recent incidents have highlighted vulnerabilities in our current system. For instance, between 2017 and 2021, an IRS contractor unlawfully disclosed confidential tax return information of thousands of individuals, including prominent figures, to media outlets. This breach underscores the urgent need for enhanced safeguards.
The proposed legislation aims to deter such unauthorized disclosures by increasing penalties. Specifically, it raises the maximum fine for unauthorized disclosure to $250,000 and extends the potential imprisonment period to up to 10 years. These stricter penalties are essential to deter potential wrongdoers and to reinforce the trust taxpayers place in our institutions.
Protecting taxpayer data is not a partisan issue; it is a fundamental responsibility. I urge all members of Congress to prioritize the passage of the Taxpayer Data Protection Act to ensure that personal tax information remains confidential and secure.
Thank you.
