Pass Laws on Gun Sales

It's time for Oregon to go after the gun industry. Oregon MUST pass bills that will:
- Allows officials to deny sales if the buyer poses a danger. Seven states have taken steps to further protect the public by allowing officials to deny purchases if they determine a person poses a danger to themselves or others. Look to Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina for legislative examples.
- Pass OR House Bill 2543 and close the Charleston Loophole to ensure gun sales don't proceed while a background check is still ongoing. This bill will eliminate the 3 day waiting period loophole that allows a sale to go through if the background check doesn't come back within 3 days. Normally they clear within minutes but if there are issues or backlogs they can take longer. In cases where the check takes longer, they are 4 times more likely to be denied, but because of the loop hole, the sale still goes through. The Charleston Loophole enables an astonishing number of illegal purchasers to arm themselves—with over 5,800 illegal sales in 2020 alone completed without a background check.
- Require all gun dealers to obtain a state license. Oregon needs to update dealer regulations on a state level to protect Oregonians where the federal government will not. In-state gun trafficking is 64 percent lower in places with strong gun dealer regulations and oversight. Fifteen other states have already adopted similar legislation, let's make Oregon #16!
