I am writing to you with a grave sense of urgency and profound distress over the ongoing atrocities committed by Israeli forces against civilians in Gaza. The harrowing story of Muhammed Bhar, a young man with Down syndrome and autism, who was brutally murdered after Israeli forces encouraged their combat dog to maul him to death. These continued inhumane tactics underscore the urgent need for action.
The 24-year-old Muhammed Bhar was often confined to a chair by his mobility issues, which is where he was sitting when the Israeli military stormed his home and unleashed their dog on him. His family has only recently returned to their home, after being displaced 15 times in nine months. They then dragged him to another room, ordered his family to leave at gunpoint, and abducted two of his brothers.
One week later, the family was able to return home, where they found Muhammed’s torn-up body lying on the floor in a pool of blood. The scene is harrowing.
Muhammed’s story is shocking and disgraceful, but not surprising. These war crimes and the overt abuse of power by Israeli leaders and forces continue to be reported daily. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated.
We must demand an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to halt the bloodshed and destruction. Sanctions against Israel are crucial to enforcing this ceasefire and compelling adherence to international law. Moreover, recognising the state of Palestine and committing to upholding the inalienable human rights of Palestinians are fundamental steps towards brokering lasting peace.
Each day that passes sees more lives lost, more families shattered, and more children left traumatised. Muhammed’s family, like many others, is left to pick up the pieces of their broken lives, living in constant fear and uncertainty. The psychological and emotional toll on these families is immense, and their suffering is compounded by the international community’s inaction.
The time to act is now. The world cannot continue to turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Your intervention can make a difference. Stand up for human rights, stand up for justice, and stand up for peace. Demand an end to the violence, and work towards a future where Palestinians can live with dignity and security.
Permanent ceasefire now.
Arms embargo now.
End the occupation now.
Recognize Palestinian statehood now.
