I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor S. 25/HR 698, the Assault Weapons Ban Act of 2023, S. 173/HR 660 Ethan’s Law—a common-sense safe storage bill— and S. 494/H.R. 715, the Background Check Expansion Act. Gun violence is an epidemic in this country and we know how to address it. The majority of the population desperately wants this. A 4/23 Fox News poll found that 87% of those polled support criminal background checks on all gun buyers, 80% support requiring mental health checks on gun buyers, 80% support allowing police to take guns from those considered a danger to themselves or others, and 77% support a 30-day waiting period for all gun purchases. Also, 61% are in favor of banning assault rifles!
All of these bills will have a measurable impact and it’s malpractice to not pass them. Please make this legislation a top priority.
