Tell the FCC: Uphold Title II - Net Neutrality Rules

Today I take pen in hand to write and ask you and your fellow members of Congress to put the current and future FCC Commissioners on notice, and to insist that they uphold the Title II net-neutrality rules. While the internet has not needed regulation to keep it neutral, the advent of new technologies like deep packet inspection has made it technologically possible for ISP’s to manage and prioritize traffic on a piece by piece basis, and further restrict our flawed, but still free, media.   The internet is arguably one of the most important inventions in American history. It’s like the printing press: It is able to provide an informed, educated Republic like ours with the means to communicate, to get free and unbiased access to information, and provide a forum for exchange of ideas, and helps free enterprise. Or it can be misused, and we’ve seen that as well.   The loss of net neutrality to corporations that wish to ‘own it’ has put all of that value at risk. The internet must not become a tool for corporations to control what news we read, what films we can watch, and who we can communicate with. Democracy in the digital era will die without it. We’re seeing some evidence of that in protests , where Internet access is being deliberately restricted.   We urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to urge the FCC Commissioners and any replacements soon to be determined, to abandon efforts to revoke the current rules, and return to ways to keep the internet neutral.
