An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Defuse harmful trade war through diplomatic negotiations

1 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!

The tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration have escalated into a harmful trade war, leading to retaliatory measures that disrupt economic cooperation and hurt citizens on both sides. The 25% surcharge on electricity exports to 1.5 million Americans in New York, Minnesota, and Michigan, valued at $700 million annually, is the latest retaliation from Ontario in response to President Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods. This tit-for-tat approach benefits no one and only breeds further conflict. I urge you to take constructive action to de-escalate tensions and resolve the underlying trade disputes through good-faith negotiations. Protectionist policies may seem appealing in the short term but inevitably lead to higher costs for consumers and businesses. Free and fair trade creates economic opportunities that improve lives on both sides of the border. As an elected leader, you have the power to steer this situation towards a positive resolution that promotes mutual understanding and economic cooperation between our nations. I implore you to work towards eliminating the tariffs and surcharges that are harming hard-working people and move our countries back towards an era of prosperous trade relations.
