Please Protect the U.S. Department of Education and IDEA!

Once again, I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the proposed executive order to shrink or potentially dismantle the U.S. Department of Education—a move that poses a direct threat to the rights of millions of students with disabilities. The Department of Education plays a critical role in enforcing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)and ensuring that students who rely on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) receive the accommodations and support they are legally entitled to. Let me be clear—IEPs are not paperwork or red tape. They are lifelines for children with diverse needs, ensuring they receive the specialized education and services necessary to succeed. Any attempt to weaken or eliminate the agency responsible for upholding these legal protections would be an unconscionable violation of civil rights and a direct assault on the principles of equity and inclusion in public education. The IDEA is not a partisan issue—it is a moral and legal obligation to provide every child with the opportunity to reach their full potential. Without robust federal oversight, students with disabilities could lose access to vital services, and families would be left without the legal framework necessary to advocate for their children’s needs. This is not just policy—it is a matter of basic human dignity. I urge you to oppose any efforts to dismantle or weaken the Department of Education and to fight for full enforcement and funding of IDEA. Congress must prioritize the well-being of our nation’s most vulnerable students over partisan agendas or budgetary concerns. The rights of students with disabilities must not be compromised. I expect you to publicly oppose these destructive proposals and take immediate action to protect the Department of Education and the vital services it provides.
