Demand Immediate Action for Return of Abducted Ukrainian Children

The ongoing crisis of Ukrainian children forcibly deported and transferred by Russian authorities demands immediate and decisive action. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, at least 19,546 cases of unlawful deportation and forced transfer of Ukrainian children have been confirmed by Kyiv, with some reports suggesting the number could be as high as 35,000. This is not just a statistic; it represents thousands of shattered families and violated childhoods.
The scale of this tragedy is staggering, yet progress in addressing it has been painfully slow. Only about 1,500 children have been returned to Ukraine through third-party mediators. This is a mere fraction of those affected, leaving thousands still separated from their families and potentially subjected to illegal adoption.
While diplomatic efforts continue, including talks between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators in Turkey, direct agreements with Russia on returning children have proven impossible without third-party involvement. This impasse is unacceptable. Every day that passes is another day of trauma for these children and their families.
I urge you to push for more aggressive measures to address this crisis. We need to elevate this issue to the forefront of all international discussions on the war in Ukraine. It should be a non-negotiable condition in any peace talks or agreements. We must also consider imposing additional sanctions specifically targeting individuals and entities involved in the unlawful transfer and detention of these children.
Furthermore, I ask that you advocate for increased support for organizations working to locate and return these children. This could include funding for investigative efforts, legal support, and resources for family reunification.
The forced deportation and transfer of children is a grave violation of human rights and international law. It's time for our government to treat this issue with the urgency it deserves. These children cannot wait for the slow wheels of diplomacy to turn. They need action now.
